Feeding Challenges & Picky Eating
Mealtimes should not feel stressful, overwhelming, or emotionally exhausting.
If your child eats only a small number of foods, refuses entire food groups, gags at certain textures, or melts down when new foods are introduced, you are not alone. Feeding challenges are incredibly common, and they are often connected to sensory processing, oral motor skills, emotional regulation, and nervous system differences.

Many parents are told their child is “just picky,” but true feeding challenges are usually much deeper than preference alone. Children with feeding difficulties are often experiencing genuine discomfort, anxiety, sensory overwhelm, or difficulty processing the sensory experience of eating.
Children with feeding challenges may:
-
Eat only a very limited variety of foods
-
Avoid foods based on texture, color, smell, or appearance
-
Gag at the sight, smell, or taste of certain foods
-
Refuse to try new foods
-
Overstuff food into their mouth
-
Have difficulty chewing or using utensils
-
Become anxious during meals
-
Prefer the same foods every day
-
Experience stress and overwhelm around mealtimes
At mOTivated Kids, we take a supportive, pressure-free approach to feeding therapy. Our goal is not to force children to eat foods before they feel ready. Instead, we focus on helping children build comfort, confidence, sensory regulation, and positive experiences with food.
We understand that feeding challenges affect the entire family. That is why parent education and collaboration are a core part of our approach. We help families better understand the “why” behind picky eating while giving practical strategies that support progress both in and outside of therapy.
With the right support, mealtimes can become calmer, less stressful, and more successful.
