Fine Motor Skills Challenges

Fine motor challenges can impact far more than handwriting. They can affect your child’s confidence, independence, school performance, and willingness to participate in everyday activities.

Maybe your child avoids coloring and crafts, struggles to hold a pencil correctly, becomes frustrated with handwriting, or needs help getting dressed long after peers their age. Perhaps schoolwork feels exhausting, scissors are difficult, or simple tasks like opening containers and using utensils become daily frustrations.

At mOTivated Kids, we understand how discouraging this can feel for both children and parents. Many children with fine motor delays are working much harder than others just to complete everyday tasks. Over time, this can lead to frustration, low confidence, task avoidance, and emotional overwhelm.

Children with fine motor skills challenges may:

  • Struggle with handwriting, drawing, or coloring

  • Hold pencils, crayons, or markers awkwardly

  • Have difficulty using scissors

  • Avoid crafts, puzzles, or tabletop activities

  • Struggle with buttons, zippers, and dressing independently

  • Have trouble using utensils during meals

  • Become frustrated with schoolwork

  • Prefer gross motor activities over seated tasks

  • Have difficulty coordinating both hands together

  • Need extra help with daily self-care tasks

Our pediatric occupational therapy sessions focus on building the foundational skills children need for success at home, school, and in daily life. We look beyond handwriting alone and address the underlying sensory, postural, coordination, visual motor, and motor planning skills that support fine motor development.

At mOTivated Kids, therapy is individualized, engaging, and child-centered. We use playful, sensory-informed activities that help children build strength, coordination, confidence, and independence while feeling successful and supported.

Most importantly, we work closely with parents so you understand what is happening, why it is happening, and how to support your child outside of therapy.
